10 Things I've Learned In 27 Years: A Birthday Reflection

It’s my 27th birthday today, and I’ve been reflecting on all the things I’ve learned in the past 27 years. Some of these lessons have been hard-earned, and some of them have come more easily. But all of them have been valuable in shaping who I am today.

Here are some things I’ve learned in 27 years:

1. It’s okay to be a little cheesy on your birthday.

2. You don’t have to have your life figured out by your 27th birthday.

3. You will make mistakes – and that’s okay.

4. Your 20s are a time for experimentation.

5. You will grow and change as a person, and that’s okay.

6. You will learn from your mistakes.

7. You will meet people who will change your life.

8. You will make friends for life.

9. You will find your tribe.

10. Your family will always be there for you.

Birthdays are a time to make yourself feel special, and I’ve found it’s perfectly fine to slip into some cheesiness here and there. From wearing a silly birthday hat to indulging in a slice of cake, let yourself celebrate and revel in the moment. It’s just a fun way to make your day extra special. That said, don’t forget to take time to be grateful for another year and to appreciate yourself for everything that you have learned and achieved. This can be an incredibly meaningful and powerful way to mark your birthday.

As you enter the 27th year of your life, you may start to feel a pressure to have everything figured out. But don’t worry – life doesn’t have this unreasonable timeline forced upon us. For most people, life is a journey, filled with highs and lows. Your life path is yours alone, and while there may be some bumps on the way, it’s alright. Instead of obsessing over ticking off certain boxes within a certain timeline, focus on the here and now, and making the right choices for the future that you envision.

You will make mistakes – and that’s okay.

It’s important to understand that mistakes are unavoidable and you must accept them as part of life. Rather than shackling yourself with guilt, use your mistakes as a learning opportunity. They are actually a chance to grow, become wiser and figure out better solutions. Speak to trusted people as you reflect on your mistakes. You don’t have to figure it all out by yourself. Seek out mentors and professionals who are well-informed and have gone through life experiences so you can raise your awareness. This will help you make well-thought out decisions in the future.

Your 20s are a time for experimentation.

There is no one-size-fits-all formula when it comes to life choices. You’re still in the process of discovering yourself and finding out what works best for you. This is the ideal time to take risks and try out new things. You shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes while discovering new experiences. Don’t place too much emphasis on the outcome of your experimentation. The point is to grow and learn, and to slowly flesh out your passions, hobbies and interests.

You will grow and change as a person, and that’s okay. This is what we all should aspire to.

As you progress through life, you are constantly evolving and becoming the person you were meant to be. This can be a gradual process and you will go through several life stages before finally finding yourself. The important thing is to stay curious, open-minded and embrace change. When you feel like you’re stuck, challenge yourself by doing something out of your routine or talking to a mentor. Sometimes, a simple lifestyle change or a different approach towards life is also a refreshing way to help you grow and bring out the best version of yourself.

Lastly, always celebrate yourself. Make your day as special as your want to and welcome to 27 babe!
